Annual Advocacy Classes
There are over 650,000 students on special education in California, and only a handful of professionals trained to serve this population. This course is taught by Rene Thomas Folse, JD, Ph.D who is both an attorney and licensed psychologist and is designed to help parents learn how to navigate this system and to recruit and train attorneys and other professionals to help them. This three day course is scheduled for September and October 2008 on the dates shown below. This course is approved by the California State Bar for MCLE continuing education credits, six hours for each day attended. Please call our office at (805) 497-9596 for enrollment information.
Course Topics
Day 1 - Saturday, September 20, 2008
- Unit 1: Introduction to special education advocacy. Glossary and acronyms. Assessment, and Eligibility issues.
- Unit 2: Free and Appropriate Public Education, the Rowley decision, LRE, Aids and Services.
- Unit 3:Life Span goals and objectives, developing the big picture for the child.
Day 2 - Saturday, October 4, 2008
- Unit 4: De-mystifying and understanding the math of psychological and educational assessment tools.
- Unit 5: Survey of specific psychological and educational assessment measures of ability (IQ), achievement, and adaptive skills.
- Unit 6: Forensic issues including presentation and cross-examination of psychological expert witnesses.
Day 3 - Saturday, October 18, 2008
- Unit 7: The IEP team process, goals, and objective writing, and measuring success or failure. Behavior problems, special discipline rules, stay put orders, and the functional assessment of behavior
- Unit 8: Dealing with due process, attorneys, and attorney fees; Special Education Hearing Office decisions – what wins and what doesn’t win.
- Unit 9: Integration with other systems – Regional center issues and the IPP; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act; Private group Health Insurance and more.
